Stanford CS224N: NLP with Deep Learning: study plan and how long it takes

The Stanford Online playlist is 23 videos and 27.5 hours long. Here's how long it takes at different paces, a week-by-week schedule built from the real videos, and a planner that turns it into your own daily plan.

Stanford CS224N (Spring 2024), led by Christopher Manning, is the best-known university course on natural language processing with deep learning. It covers word vectors, neural networks and backpropagation, dependency parsing, RNNs and LSTMs, attention and transformers, pretraining, and post-training methods like RLHF that turn pretrained models into assistants.

Lectures run about 80 minutes, and the assignments are on the course website.

Who it's for: Students and engineers with ML basics, Python and linear algebra who want a rigorous foundation in modern NLP and LLMs.

How long does it take?

The full playlist is 27.5 hours across 23 videos. Here's roughly how many days that is at different daily watch times and speeds, counting video time only:

Make your own schedule

The playlist link is already filled in. Press Plan, set how much time you have each day and your speed, and you'll get a day-by-day schedule with a finish date and a calendar file. It reads the live playlist, so new videos are included.

Week-by-week schedule

A sample plan at 1 hour a day and normal speed, using whole videos so none is split across days. That's 4 weeks in total. For a different pace, start date or speed, use the planner above.

Tips for finishing

  • Plan two lectures a week if you're doing the assignments; they take longer than the videos.
  • Read the suggested papers for the transformer and pretraining lectures; they make the lectures far easier to follow.
